A Friend of the World
“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
James 4:4 KJV
I am amazed at the number of people these days that call themselves “Christians”. There are several instances on soul-winning visitation when I (and a few of my brothers and sisters in Christ) ask the person if they have a Church home. Some of them genuinely answer “Yes, I do have a church home”, while other people answer “yes” just to say or indicate that they have a belief in God or are “Christians.” On soul-winning encounters, we always tell that particular person that more important than going to Church is having a personal relationship with the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The question: “If you were to die today, can you say with 100% certainty that you’re going to heaven?” always stumps these “Christians”. Some of them want to hear more so that they can know that they are going to heaven. However, some of them become closed to the Gospel and shut the door on us. My point is: the reason why have so many of these “Christians” are because too many “Christian” folk have the wrong friend (not plural): The world.
I was reading a so-called Christian blog once. Everything was fine until I scrolled down to the webmaster’s bio. The words jumped up off the screen: “I AM A SUPPORTER OF GAY MARRIAGE EQUALITY.” Immediately, I got off the site and blocked it. Any person who says they’re a Christian and says they support gay marriage is NOT a true Christian. Don’t be fooled. “Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” This is why many people are being led astray from true, Bible-based Christianity. There are so many false “Christians” who are friends with the world.
For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
Mark 13:32 (KJV)
Being a friend with the world is a serious offense against God and it deters people from ever seeking the true God, because so many Christians are living worldly lifestyles. In fact, our friendship with the world can even cause other believers to sin. “Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe [unto him], through whom they come! It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.” (Luke 17:1-3 KJV) The Greek word used for “offence” in verse ones means to “cause to sin” or ” to put into a trap”. Basically, Jesus is saying that it is impossible for these temptations to stop coming, because we live in a fallen world , but sorrow [woe] be to the man who causes another brother or sister in Christ to sin. The purpose of me putting this verse in this article is to warn Christians from the Word of God that being a friend of the world not only makes you an enemy of God, but it can also cause other Christians to sin and that is NOT okay in the eyes of God.
