A Strange Woman & The Purpose of Wisdom
‘To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life. That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.’
Proverbs 2:16-22 (KJV)
The strange woman, or lost woman, uses flattery to attract the man that is void of wisdom, understanding, and discretion. The lost woman, in other words, appeals to a mans pride and puffs him up with haughtiness , so that he will succumb and submit to her temptation. Her desire is not to love, but to kill; not to have a family, but to destroy it; not to have a husband, but to steal other wives’ husbands. There is nothing good about the lost woman and harlot who is trying to tempt the young, Christian man to go in unto her. She has forsaken the guide of her youth, the instruction of her father, and the instruction of her mother. Instead, her ways lead only to sin and death and her goal is to destroy the Christian man’s testimony and ruin the impact that a Christian man can have on this world for Christ.
The crucial reason for obtaining wisdom and discretion is to initiate a pattern of godly living. If we have godly wisdom and discretion from on high, then we will have a consistent manner of living that lines up with what we believe. Being a Christian, then, no longer remains simply a verbal assertion, but a spiritual reality that we are being conformed into the image of Christ. What a privilege we have to live for Christ and know that we shall not be cut off from the earth like the wicked, but that we shall inherit the earth as promised by Jesus on the Sermon on the Mount.
