Daily Scripture Musing–5/16/16
It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.”
As Christians, we often fail to realize God’s abundant mercy and grace that is bestowed upon us each day. Even for the wicked, God gives them chance after chance after chance to be saved. It is only because of the Lord’s mercy and grace that we are not consumed and it is because of His mercy and grace that the wicked are not devoured by God’s fierce wrath.
Notice how the writer of Lamentations (Jeremiah) writes in verse 23, “They are new every morning…” God’s mercies and God’s compassions are new every morning. That also means when we wake up, we should forget about yesterday’s troubles and forsake tomorrow’s troubles and just focus on the Lord. As the Bible says, “GREAT is thy FAITHFULNESS!”
In verse 24, we see that Jeremiah says close to the same words as the psalmist, “The LORD is my portion. saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.” If God is our portion, if we are saved, we ought to put our hope and full trust in Him. Man is never faithful. God is always faithful. Man’s compassion fails. But God’s compassion never fails. Man’s mercy fails. But God’s mercy never fails.
May we remember the age-old hymn and be reminded that the Lord is faithful and that He alone should be our trust and our hope:
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
