Do You Hate Your Brother or Sister in Christ?
Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
In this passage of Scripture, God is instructing the Israelites on how they should behave among their people. In this particular verse, God gives a commandment that “thou shalt not hate thy brother…”
The reason why God gave the Israelites this commandment is revealed in Genesis 27:41, ”
And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.”
Esau hated his brother so much that he desired to kill him. Thus, God, seeing the wickedness of such an act, made a commandment that forbade a man to hate his brother.
This commandment has a New Testament application as well. The Bible makes it very clear in 1 John that “He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.” The Bible also says that ‘he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.”
When we try to live the Christian life while hating our fellow Christian, we are stifling God’s blessings in our life. We walk in spiritual darkness and our fellowship with God is hindered, because hating your brother is a sin.
Even when we do not particularly like a person, God commands us to love them just as much as any one else. May we never find ourselves in the predicament where we hate our fellow Christian.
