Warning Every Man…
Whom we preach, warning every man,… (Colossians 1:28a)
Last week we examined the first part of Colossians 1:28, “Whom we
preach…” Just to recap, we said that:
- All saved, born-again Christians should have the desire to preach the
Gospel to every lost person because:
- a) we have been saved by Christ, the hope of glory, and we should want
to share that hope with others
- b) Christ, the hope of glory, is coming quickly and therefore in eager
anticipation of his coming, we ought to preach the Gospel to every
lost person to whom we come in contact
- Every Christian has a ministry: to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus
so that lost sinners can come to Christ and be saved (this is the main
reason why we were left here on this Earth after we were saved).
- We ought not to grow weary in serving the Lord through the preaching
of the Gospel, because in due season we shall reap from our labor if
we faint not
Today, we will examine the second phrase in this verse, “Warning every
man…”. So what does it mean to warn somebody? The Webster’s
Dictionarydefines the word “warn” as: “to give notice of
approaching or probable danger or evil, that it may be avoided; to
caution against any thing that may prove injurious.” In the context of
this verse, it means to caution or reprove gentlly or to admonish. Thus,
what the Bible is saying is that we ought to caution, or admonish every
man about the “probable danger” to come or “to caution against
anything that may prove [harmful] to him/her.”
So, if we are to warn every man, what things should be warning him of?
The first thing we should warn the lost person of is the eternal
punishment and damnation of Hell if they do not repent and believe on
Jesus Christ to save them from their sin.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
We should explain to the lost person that their sin creates a separation
between them and God and because God is just and holy, He has to judge
sin. Therefore, if you do not accept Jesus Christ as Savior, you will
have a future in Hell and spend all of eternity in everlasting fire,
separated from God forever and ever.
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
quenched. (Mark 9:44)
The second thing we should warn the lost person of is that Jesus Christ
is coming quickly and that time is running out to be saved.
And, behold, I come quickly… (Revelation 22:12a)
In personal soul-winning, I have come across several lost people who
think they have “plenty of time” for them to accept the Lord Jesus
Christ. I found that this is especially the case with other teenagers
like me who think they have a whole life ahead of them and therefore
they keep putting it off and saying “I’ll do it at home sometime
tomorrow.” However, when lost people say things like this, it is OUR
JOB to WARN THEM that that attitude is dangerous
because your life is not promised and two things could happen to you: 1)
you could (God forbid) get hit by a car and die tonight and go to Hell
or 2)Jesus could come back tonight and it would be eternally too late
for you to get saved!!
When warning them about this subject, it is helpful to use the following
verses (in addition to Revelation 22:12).
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life?
It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then
vanisheth away. (James 4:14)
(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of
salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time;
behold, now is the day of salvation.) (2 Corinthians 6:2)
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the
judgment: (Hebrews 9:27)
The third thing we should warn the lost peson of is that if they do not
get saved, there is a time when they will have to stand before God at
the Great White Throne Judgment and fall into the hands of the Living
God, where He will pronounce His final judgment upon them because they
rejected the gracious sacrifice of the Lord Jesus on Calvary’s Cross.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die,
but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27)
But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery
indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. (Hebrews 10:27)
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house
of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the
end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? (1
“…to reserve the unjust unto the day of
judgment to be punished: (2 Peter 2:9b)
(11) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on
it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there
was found no place for them.
(12) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand
before God; and the books were opened: and another book was
opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of
those things which were written in the books, according to
Finally, there is yet another aspect of “Warning every man…” that we
must examine. Yes, we recognize that it is very important to warn the
lost, but it is equally important to warn our brethren, that is, our
fellow Christians, not of the wrath to come obviously, because they are
saved, but of things that may be harmful to their walk with God or cause
them to ruin their testimony.
1 Thessalonians 5:14
(14) Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly,
comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
Acts 20:27 (27) For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the
counsel of God.
1 Corinthians 4:14 (14) I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved
sons I warn you.
Also, we are to warn our brethren about the false teachers and heretics
that may arise and we must warn them about their harmful doctrines.
(29) For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves
enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
(30) Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking
perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
(31) Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of
three years I ceased not to warn every one
night and day with tears.
Summing it all up, our responsibility and goal as saved, born-again
christians is to WARN EVERYONE of the things that will be
harmful to them and we need to make it a point as was stated in the
previous article to always preach the Gospel and to be instant in season
and out of season to ensure that we are doing our best to WARN
the lost person of the wrath to come and to WARN the
fellow Christian of sin that will destroy his/her testimony and of false
teachers and heretics.
May you commit to pray today, that you will make it your goal and
purpose that today and everday, you will WARN EVERY MAN?
