Do You Put Your Trust in Man or God?
“Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man…; Trust in the LORD, and do good…and verily thou shalt be fed.”
Jeremiah 17:5; Psalms 37:3 (KJV)
In this rather direct and somewhat harsh passage of Scripture, we see right off the bat a “thus saith the LORD.” There ought to be no doubt in our minds that this verse is meant to be understood literally, as it is spoken by God Himself. In Jeremiah 17:5b, the Scripture says, “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man.” Those are some very strong words for sure.
I never used to understand why God would hate it so much when we put our trust in man (or much worse, in ourselves). As I began to pray about it and search the Scriptures about it, God gave me the answer. When we put our trust in man, it shows that we have unbelief abiding in our heart, that we have a lack of faith in God, and that we are not willing to simply put our trust in Him.
I want to assure you, however, that as much as you may struggle with the sin of trusting in man, you are not alone. The disciples struggled with it as well. Time after time, Jesus had to remind them to have faith in God. The Bible assures us in Psalms 37:3 that if we “trust in the LORD, and do good…verily thou shalt be fed.”
When we trust in the LORD and stand on His precepts and His promises, we will be fed with the Word of God, and we will experience a more abundant and fruitful Christian life.
