UNBELIEF: Do you Believe?
We recognize from the Bible that unbelief is a sin. Hebrews 3:12 says, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” We can see from this verse that unbelief starts in the heart, and once it has completed its work, it makes the heart evil, and causes one to depart from the living God. Even for a Christian, unbelief can still seep in when times get hard, and is often the result of a severe lack of faith. Sometimes, unbelief is caused by our own fleshly stubbornness and arrogance towards Almighty God. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” There are several examples of men in the Bible who became prideful and arrogant and therefore did not believe God’s promises. One such example is Zechariah from the New Testament. Luke 1:11-20 says, “And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.” We can easily see here that Zechariah did not believe God’s promise through the angel Gabriel that his wife would bear a son. Once again, we realize from verse twenty that unbelief has a consequence. The angel caused Zechariah not to speak, because he “believest not my words.” Zechariah, through his lack of faith, allowed the evil heart of unbelief to creep up inside of him, and he was punished as a result of his unbelief. It is sad that our own pride, arrogance, and lack of faith can cause us to commit this terrible sin.
Finally, let’s look at the last aspect of unbelief. This last aspect of unbelief actually does not pertain to the saved, born again, Christian–it pertains to the lost. In soul-winning, we have encountered several lost people who have shut the door on us or simply refused to believe that Jesus Christ was the only true God. Some didn’t believe that Jesus would want them to give up their lifestyle. Some just were too busy to hear the Gospel. We know from the Bible that such unbelief is caused directly by the devil. As 2 Corinthians 4:4 says, “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” The devil deliberately blinds lost people who are wallowing in unbelief so that they will remain confused or “closed” to the Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God. This is the case with many atheists today, including some popular humanists and scientific naturalists such as Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking, and Bill Nye. This third aspect of unbelief is where we will spend most of our time today.
The reason why millions of lost people do not get saved is originally traced back to unbelief. As we saw in 2 Corinthians 4:4, the devil deliberately blinds the minds of them which do not believe so that they will never come to know the Lord Jesus Christ. It is sad to say that the devil has succeeded in his attempt to blind the minds of lost people across America, and worldwide and as a result, the whole world has become wicked. 1 John 5:19 says, “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.” The wickedness of this world is not hidden, it is not secret, it is unfolding right before our eyes. Music has become filthier over the years, with profanity becoming increasingly prevalent in music videos. Glorification of fornication in music videos, television, and the Internet has led to more teens becoming enticed and thinking it is “OK” to have sex before marriage. Organizations such as Planned Parenthood and others have led to more women thinking it is “OK” to kill an innocent, unborn baby. Charismatic churches that have been on the rise over the past decade have deceived people insomuch that the large majority of professing Christians are lukewarm Christians, or perhaps not even Christians at all. Finally, we have seen the rise of evolutionary and naturalistic thought, which in turn has led to more agnostics and atheists than any other generation since the birth of Jesus Christ! All this is the result of unbelief. People have simply perverted the gospel of Christ, because they did not believe, and in turn have led millions of people down the broad way, which leads to destruction. Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Galatians 1:7: “Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.” There are example of several false teachers who have deceived many with their false doctrines of prosperity and earthly blessing. People like T.D. Jakes, Joyce Meyer, and Joel Osteen have deceived millions of lost, vulnerable people into believing a false Gospel of prosperity and financial blessing through donations to Christian ministries and so-called “prayer”. It is sad to say that hundreds of thousands of people in America will either go to Hell or be left behind on the Earth when the Rapture comes before the Great Tribulation. Luke 17:35-36, “Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.”
Once again, unbelief is a terrible sin. We also know that the reason why this whole world lies in wickedness is because of the unbelief of thousands and thousands of people who have made a decision to believe that “God is dead” or that “God doesn’t exist” or perhaps that “God co-exists” or perhaps that God is a created thing just like everything else. The reason why we have seen the proliferation of such wickedness in our society is because America’s conscience has become defiled because of our society’s blatant unbelief. Titus 1:15-16, “Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. 16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.” One such example is the Duck Dynasty characters who are professing Christians. There’s another video that I’ve featured on my channel by my brother in Christ, Brian Moonan, that exposes Duck Dynasty and talks about their unbelief as well. You can find that under the “Liked Videos” playlists under the playlists tab on my YouTube Channel. I hope you enjoy the video.
Now, back to our video. We realize that unbelief is a sin. We also realize that for lost people, their conscience becomes defiled because they are unbelieving. This is why we have seen the rise of fornication and uncleanness being proliferated through various types of media. We also realize that those who allow the evil heart of unbelief to take complete control over them, all the way to their deathbed will be punished by Almighty God. Job 15:22: “He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.” Mark 16:16: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” John 3:18-21: “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” John 3:36: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” 1 John 5:10: “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.” Finally, those who allow unbelief to prevent them from getting saved will have a home in hell. Revelation 21:8, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
To the Christian, I strongly encourage you to keep yourself from this terrible sin of unbelief. Unbelief is an invention of the devil, and if you allow it to seep in, even for a little while, it can wreak havoc on your spiritual life.
To the unsaved person, I strongly encourage you to get saved and come to Jesus and resist the devil, so that He will not tempt you with this terrible sin of unbelief. The end of unbelief is death in Hell, and Hell is for all of eternity. Even if you don’t believe at this present time that Jesus can save you, I pray for your right now that the Holy Spirit would speak to your heart and convict you that Jesus can save you if you just accept Him with your whole heart and allow him to come in, and take control over your life. If you desire to do that this morning, I ask that you would pray this prayer with faith, not with a heart of unbelief, but with full trust and faith that Jesus Christ will save you: Dear Jesus, I know that I’m a sinner and I’m sorry for my sins. I believe that you love me, that you died for me and that on the third day your rose from the grave. I am asking you with all of my heart to forgive me of my sins, come into my heart, and save my soul. Thank you for saving me. I will see you in Heaven one day. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
