Weekly Bible Insight-2 Peter 3:9-10
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2 Peter 3:9-10 (KJV)
In this passage of Scripture, Peter addresses his audience about the last days. He warns them emphatically about the “day of the Lord” and that this present world will be dissolved and pass away. In verses nine and ten, Peter affirms the Christian that Jesus will not be slack in His promise to come back and marry His bride (the Church), but this verse also serves as a warning to all ungodly men that believe that Jesus will not return and “lied” to his Church about His promise to establish a new Heaven and a new earth.
The last part of verse nine is particularly powerful: “…not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” This is the same attitude we should have when soul-winning. Our heart’s desire should be that no one should perish in Hell, but that all should come to repentance.
In verse 10, Peter gives a brief revelation of what the day of the Lord will be like. He says it “will come as a thief in the night.” Some unbelievers think that this alludes to Jesus being a thief, but it simply is a metaphorical expression that the day of the Lord will catch everyone by surprise. Peter also says that the “heavens shall pass away with a great noise” and that the “elements shall melt with fervent heat.” What this basically means is that all the underlying rock formations and striations that we currently live on will be burnt, just like the Flood, and the atmosphere and the things above it “shall pass away with a great noise.” How powerful is that my friend? Christian, will you meditate on that today ? Will you let this grim picture of the day of the LORD ignite a burden in your heart to win souls to Christ? Sinner, I pray for you, that you would let the Word of God speak to your heart, that you might be saved by the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, so that you will not have to endure the eternal torment and damnation of Hell. Be blessed my friends and peace be unto you.
