Weekly Bible Insight-John 6:44-48
Today’s Weekly Bible Insight is taken from John 6:44-48, which concerns the deity of Christ and what people will have to do to inherit everlasting life.
(John 6:44) No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
(John 6:45) It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
(John 6:46) Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
(John 6:47) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
(John 6:48) I am that bread of life.
Common to popular belief, verse 44 does not mean that God picks and chooses who will be saved. The Greek word used here for draw means to drag, figuratively speaking, not literally speaking. Thus, it can be deduced that Jesus is talking about the conviction of the Holy Spirit that has to prick a person’s heart before one can be saved. He is by no means referring to the doctrine of predestination. The next verse, verse 45, quotes from Isaiah 54:13-14: “And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children. In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.” Jesus is saying in the latter half of verse 45 that whoever hears His voice, has learned who the Father is, and they will “come unto me.” In other words, they get saved. Verse 46 proves the fact that God is a Spirit and cannot be seen of man. This verse also confirms the deity of Christ, “…Save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.” Verse 47 simply confirms what one must do to gain everlasting life, “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” Verse 48 re-affirms Jesus’ previous statement in verse 33, “For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.” In verse 48 Jesus makes sure his listeners know that He is the Son of Man, “I am that bread of life.” Be blessed my friends.
