Are You Experiencing Discouragement and Defeat in Your Christian Life?
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
(8) We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
(9) Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
In this passage of Scripture, the Apostle Paul is telling the Corinthian church about their experiences on missionary journeys. In these two verses, Paul explains the immense and persistent persecution that they faced while preaching the Gospel.
Many Christians often feel very discouraged and sometimes even defeated when we get persecuted or cast down because of our position as Bible-believing Christians. This has happened to me as well, perhaps more frequently than it should have.
The Apostle Paul said that he was “troubled on every side, yet not distressed.” When we rest in Jesus Christ, and look to Him when troubles come, we find ourselves not distressed, but rather joyful. Paul also said that he was “perplexed, but not in despair.” The Greek word used here for perplexed means to be without or to suffer loss. Over the course of his missionary journey, Paul had lost a lot. However, he did not despair because of it. He had faith in God.
Finally, Paul said he was “persecuted, but not forsaken.” Many Christians do not make this truth a reality. God will NEVER forsake us. We don’t have to fight the devil on our own, we don’t have to fight our flesh on our own, we don’t have to fight the world on our own. All we have to do is look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, and lean unto HIS understanding.
Are you experiencing defeat or discouragement today? Look to Jesus, ask for His strength, and He will restore unto you the joy of His glorious salvation.
